The movie starts off with the national trials. Sakshi is proud of her daughter, who has won a bronze medal at the Judo nationals. But things go awry when she gets to know that her daughter quit Judo and is now doing boxing under coach Vijay Kumar (Varun Dhawan). Sakshi confronts Vijay and tells him to stop it and come back to judo.Later, we see how Sakshi tried to teach Manisha her skills in order for her not be bullied at school again by the caste kids. She also found out about their training sessions from time-to-time as she would wait outside the grounds, dressed as a man so as not to be recognized by those around them. After this sequence, we see that Manisha has begun her boxing career and is now participating in the national championship.

The story revolves around the character of Sakshi (Anushka Sharma). Sakshi is a devoted wife and mother who constantly worries about her daughter Manisha (Kriti Sanon). She's constantly anxious about what people might think of her daughter, so she always tries to help her daughter be as tough as possible. Shikha (Kangna Ranaut) constantly puts pressure on Sakshi for things she herself doesn't bother too much about. But there is one thing that bothers both of them, which is Manisha. She was a champion at Judo and had won many medals, but one day she just walks away from it and starts boxing. This angers both her parents and they ask her to stop and return to Judo. But Manisha doesn't listen and so they decide to follow her everywhere. One day while following her, they get caught up in the middle of a fight by some local goons. They get beaten up badly; Shikha gets hit with a rock on the head and gets knocked out cold. Sakshi gets severely injured when one of the goons rams his car into her. She loses her job when they think that she was hit by the car when she was driving it. They can't pay their rent, their daughter has left them behind, the only thing they have to look forward to is Sakshi's mother who is getting married soon. Sakshi has no choice but to become a house maid, just so she can feed Shikha and her mother. Manisha comes home and sees how much of a mess their life has become and starts helping her mother, but at the same time continues boxing training. She is very good at it and wins many matches. She gets an opportunity to fight her mother in order to prove that she is not useless. Sakshi gets up on the day of the match, but is not able to fight because of her injuries. Manisha defeats her mother, who realizes that what she thought was useless was very useful for them after all. After getting home, they celebrate their daughter's birthday but they are still in a very bad situation with no money and no work. They try to find out about an eye operation Manisha needs done, but are unable to afford it.
